Explainer Video for Inclusive Intakes. In one sentence- "pre visit intakes, from the patients cell phone into the providers charting".
A quiet Winter/Spring for us. Honestly a bit tough because leadership at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine- Psychiatry, under the direction of its chair, Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody, didn't renew Bryan's contract for 2024. Bryan has 'worked at UNC' seeing patients and developed mental health apps on his own time. A couple of years ago Bryan tried collaborating with UNC about app development, but Dr. Meltzer-Brody declined collaboration and tried to 'steal it' by gaslighting and asserting ANY of Bryan's work was UNC property. UNC's office of tech commercialization ruled it wasn't in Bryan's job description to build apps and that he owned his independent app work. Dr. Meltzer-Brody then chose not to collaborate, instead she got upset anyone would 'go against her' and assured Bryan, in person, that she would use her influence to make sure he failed so he could learn a lesson. No more awards or raises for Bryan. He wanted to walk away from UNC but he had 200 patients he was taking care of and didn't want to leave them. So he just kept his head down at UNC and took care of his beloved patients and worked on his apps on his own time. Fast forward a couple years and Bryan's project is getting national attention and Bryan is thriving in the Launch Chapel Hill Business Accelerator. Bryan's success, to include spinning off a non profit for his teen mental health intake app starts taking away attention from another Launch company, We Are Exo Inc. They are a 'female led'/'femtech' start-up at the Accelerator that said they were building an app for women with post partum depression. At Launch there is supposed to be collaboration, but there is also a natural entrepreneurial competition for attention and investment. Bryan started getting the calls, not We Are Exo, to do things like speak about health tech at the Business School. In a tragic twist for Bryan, he discovered that Dr. Samantha-Brody, who Bryan did everything he could to stay under her Rader, was on We Are Exo Inc's team. Bryan fully supports 'women led' and 'female focused' and any 'elevated voice' but at some point those running on that banner need an actual product. Two years into their project and We Are Exo was struggling with a terrible app design, no functionality, way behind on promises for a reveal date, and clearly not with any kind of viable product. Bryan stayed positive about their efforts because post partum depression is such a real and serious issue. The women of We Are Exo (they made it about gender) clearly didn't like one single man doing better than their group of women. We Are Exo Inc took a different approach to Bryan getting the attention and were adversarial. Bryan hadn't spoken to Dr. Meltzer-Brody in over a year and her, obviously hating that Bryan was doing well, and wanting to complete her promise of him failing, she arranged a tech style zoom ambush meeting disguised as a 'check in meeting' and told Bryan his contract wasn't going to be renewed for 2024. She smiled with an odd glee during the delivery. HR wasn't even on the call to plan out Bryan's remaining time with UNC. Bryan asserts her revenge was, among other things, a conflict of interest per UNC policy and he filed a grievance. Dr. Meltzer-Brody certainly didn't like Bryan filing a grievance, he clearly hadn't learned his lesson that one never challenges Dr. Meltzer-Brody. Bryan alleges she then retaliated (illegally) by reassigning Bryan out of clinical care and expressly forbid from notify his patients, some of whom he had cared for the past 10 years. She forced abandonment in patients Bryan was seeing for abandonment issues!!! Just to make Bryan look bad. This is next level cruelty and its unbelievable a Psychiatry department would do this. Patients were told "Bryan left" and there was mental health harm done to all his patients who were led to believe their mental health provider left without even a goodbye. Against all ethics and NC Med board guidance, there was no transition planning for these patients, these patients were made to believe Bryan abandoned them. Patients were frantic, knowing Bryan would never disappear. Some, with severe anxiety issues, were in tears thinking Bryan died suddenly because the clinic told them "Bryan is gone" and wouldn't give any other details. Now Bryan is known for staying positive but Dr. Meltzer-Brody, in Bryan's experience, has shown herself to be petty, vengeful, unethical, and a complete imposter of leadership. It is such a disappointment for someone with such a good reputation to be in real life- the polar opposite of their fake cultivated reputation. UNC had her as a featured speaker at December's commencement and she spoke about "compassion and listening" when her real life mantra is control and "my way or face my wrath". The School of Medicine hasn't listened to or helped Bryan and has gone to great lengths to protect her. UNC has gone to great lengths to protect her. It certainly won't look good when the truth about their commencement speaker comes out. How could she be allowed to basically fire Bryan when there was such a clear conflict of interest with her role with We Are Exo and Bryan's work here with Inclusive Intakes? Bryan's wife has told him "you sound angry", yes, if you mess with his patients and intentionally cause harm, Bryan is going to be angry and he is going to advocate so Dr. Meltzer-Brody doesn't do this to others. Bryan is advocating and always will. The only way to go against a bully is to stand up for yourself and Bryan is. Many others have let Bryan know this isn't an isolated incident. Dr. Meltzer Brody felt threatened by Bryan's groundbreaking work and instead of supporting and leading those trying to make a difference in mental health like a leader does, she clapped back because she wanted all credit and control. More to come when the time is right, there is a story alleging failure of leadership, illegal activities, a cover-up, and intentional patient harm of mental health patients by Dr. Meltzer-Brody and Dr. Austin Hall (clinic director following Dr. Meltzer-Brody's instructions) that will be told... it might take going to court. Bryan has tried to work with UNC but they have circled the wagons around Dr. Meltzer Brody. Bryan filed an ethics complaint and got "no response", no explanation. He has tried multiples of times to even have a conversation with the ethics office and they refuse. 9 months after filing the grievance, still no date to hear it, stalling is just making this worse. Stay tuned.
Update- We are Exo Inc. has dropped their app and pivoted in yet another new direction and still without a product. Bryan believes their multiples of failures isn't because they are "woman led", it doesn't matter they are women, it matters that is all they focus on when they should be product driven. Since Bryan filed his grievance, Dr. Meltzer-Brody's picture and bio have entirely disappeared from We Are Exo's website though and the UNC School of Medicine logo has disappeared from being listed as a partner. Hmmm..... But still absolutely no help from the UNC School of Medicine or the UNC office of Ethics with these issues listed in the grievance. Just a continued cover-up.

One of the toughest races in the world. No previous female finishers. She made the 60 hour cut off by a mere 90 seconds! Outstanding!
Watch on Netflix "The race that eats its young" to learn about the Barkley's and it's founder Lazarus Lake.
I'm not a fan of our 'everyone gets a trophy society'. Neither is Laz. In my world everyone deserves the same opportunity, not the same outcome. Do with it what you want and sometimes it is failure that teaches you best.
I joined the ultra community last year, toeing up to a different Lazarus Lake race creation called The Last Annual Vol State (it is always 'the last'), a 314 mile race, unsupported, across Tennessee in the July Summer heat. I made it 91 miles before missing a check point time. Failure has bugged me ALL year. Come the second Thursday in July this year, I'll be on the 7am Dorena Hickman Ferry to start once again- with full intent to go the distance no matter what. https://vacationwithoutacar.com/races/vol-state/
Thanks for the April training inspiration Paris!!!!!!!!
What a great event. We are motivated by all that is going on in Behavioral Tech
Details soon. You know we are always working on something great!
It's official!!!! It's a 7 month wait with the IRS after submitting form 1023 paperwork and our application was finally processed and approved by the IRS. Many opportunities require official status- so now it's a green light for grant applications.
We don't think mental health should be boring. One of our favorite intakes is with Brian and Rowena from Kona Hawaii. Something positive and different. Smiles, the Ukulele, and Aloha Spirit- this is a positive feel good journey focused on Mental Health, not mental illness.

You or your Adolescent has an upcoming visit with a mental health provider and they would like to start the visit with some information with how things are going. This gets things off to a better start, especially if your visit is via telehealth. We are going to let you use your own technology device to complete Next Generation intakes that are personalized, as they should be, to language, ethnicity, age, orientation, gender, and much more.
No, you don't. This is completely voluntary. If you are not comfortable with the technology or with the Intakes, don't complete it. No worries, your provider can ask in person.
